Context
 
Thucydides, the ancient Greek philosopher, once remarked on the danger of separating scholars from warriors, warning that such a divide could result in cowardly thinking and foolish fighting. This observation has prompted several nations to establish "defence universities" aimed at fostering academic excellence and strategic acumen within their armed forces. Notably, in India's vicinity, reports indicate that Pakistan has developed two universities for its military, while China boasts three such institutions. Moreover, a report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute identifies over 60 Chinese universities with ties to the military and security sectors. Against this backdrop, the absence of the long-awaited Indian Defence University (IDU) raises concerns.

4. Indian Defence University (IDU)
 

The Indian Defence University (IDU) is a proposed university envisioned to be the premier institute for military education in India. Its establishment has been a topic of discussion for decades, with the initial proposal emerging in 1967 by the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC).

Objectives of the IDU

  • Provide a robust education system grounded in academic excellence for India's armed forces.
